Abstract: The manufacturing industry plays an irreplaceable supporting role in the modern economic system. While manufacturing firms drive economic growth, their extensive development model also leads to environmental crises. Therefore, how to achieve green and high-quality development of manufacturing firms has become a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. Green total factor productivity (GTFP) is a key indicator for measuring the green and high-quality development of manufacturing firms. It not only emphasizes production efficiency but also considers firms' resource utilization and environmental protection, thereby balancing economic development and ecological benefits.

To accelerate the improvement of quality and efficiency in the manufacturing industry, policies and measures related to the integration of manufacturing firms and the Internet have been continuously introduced and implemented. Existing studies have discussed the advantages of digital technology in reducing information costs or improving the efficiency of individual production links, and have preliminarily examined the economic performance of firms brought by the integration of manufacturing firms and the Internet, or the impact of such integration on a certain aspect of firms' green development. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the deep-seated changes in organizational structure, management mode, and business paradigm triggered by such integration, as well as the impact of these changes on the comprehensive economic and environmental benefits of firms. Therefore, whether and how the integration of manufacturing firms and the Internet can improve firms' GTFP is worth further discussion.

Based on the panel data from Chinese A-share listed manufacturing firms from 2012 to 2024, this paper takes the pilot projects of the integration of manufacturing firms and the Internet as a quasi-natural experiment to explore the direct impact and underlying mechanisms, employing the difference-in-differences (DID) method. The findings reveal that such integration can enhance firms' GTFP. Mechanism analysis indicates that the enhancing effect operates by improving firms' technological innovation and resource utilization capabilities. Heterogeneity analysis shows that this enhancement is more pronounced among non-state-owned enterprises, firms in non-heavily polluting industries, and those located in the eastern and western regions.

Based on the above research conclusions, this paper proposes the following policy recommendations: continuing to strengthen the deep integration of manufacturing and the Internet; focusing on enhancing manufacturing firms' technological innovation and resource utilization capabilities to provide institutional guarantees for the effective improvement of GTFP; and implementing tailored strategies for firms of varying ownership types, characteristics, and regional locations.
